Description
Are you seeking a fulfilling veterinary career that offers an excellent work/life balance, all while experiencing the beauty and adventure of Alaska? We invite you to join our mixed animal practice located just 2 miles from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.
About the Practice
Our busy, well-established mixed animal clinic (75% small animal, 25% large animal) serves a diverse range of clients and patients, including dogs, cats, exotic pets, small ruminants, horses, and other livestock. Our practice is set within beautiful Birch and Aspen forest on the outskirts of Fairbanks, with a 30+ mile trail system nearby — perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska, the regional hub of the interior.
The clinic is housed in a charming cabin-style building, featuring:
- A main floor with a full clinic setup
- Approximately 2,000 sq. ft. of living space (available to the veterinarian)
- An additional apartment downstairs and a rustic guest cabin on-site for use in the summer months
Our clinic is a small team of one vet and nurse/receptionist. Duties are shared and include all aspects of small and large animal medicine, surgery, and emergency care.
Work Schedule & Hours
- Flexible schedule with clinic hours designed to allow for a break during the day (usually noon – 3pm) depending on case load
- Regularly servicing properties within a 25 mile radius of Fairbanks
- Afterhours offered to clients if you are in the clinic or available. Our clients have no expectation that someone is available at all times.
- Seasonal opportunities for outdoor adventure, including biking, swimming, skiing and hiking
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive base salary: $3500–$4000/week (contingent on skill and experience)
- Housing included (utilities included; valued at ~$40,000/year and tax-free)
- Vehicle provided for work and personal use
About You
We’re looking for a motivated, independent veterinarian who:
- Has strong clinical and surgical skills
- Can work well both independently and as part of a small, cohesive team
- Is comfortable with a broad range of species and case types
- Is willing to adapt to occasional after-hours calls and emergencies
- Appreciates Alaska’s adventurous and outdoor lifestyle
Previous mixed animal experience is preferred but not essential if this an interest you wish to develop.
Commitment
We are ideally seeking a veterinarian to join us for the majority of the year with the opportunity for 2–3 months leave. An option to purchase the business will exist for the right candidate.

Testimonial from previous employees:
“We found this job advert when we were looking for work in the US and thought it had to be too good to be true – we were thrilled to discover it was everything it was advertised to be! While we were working it gave us a fantastic opportunity to apply our mixed vet skills in a new community of clients who were very appreciative of the care we provided their animals. It also provided a great opportunity to explore Alaska in the breaks when we weren’t working (lots of camping trips, long drives to remote places we otherwise would never have dreamed of visiting). A home to live in and a vehicle to use as we pleased, meant we were able to save a lot of money despite doing lots of travel. We are committed to work in Australia now but for anyone looking to set up their life career as a veterinarian, this is a great opportunity to earn a good income while having a great work-life balance.” Drs. Den and Tom Gilheany, veterinarians from Australia
