About the Role
Shelter Veterinarians provides diagnostic, preventive, and surgical care for animals in our custody and supports the operation of the shelter’s veterinary clinic. You’ll work closely with leadership and staff to maintain high standards of care and ensure each animal entering our facility is treated with respect and compassion. This position is central not only to animal health, but to nurturing a positive, respectful, and growthoriented culture across the shelter.

Key Responsibilities

Provide positive, supportive supervision to all staff, including assigning tasks, coaching, evaluating performance, and building a culture of collaboration, trust, and shared learning.
Prepare, maintain, and review medical records, statistics, surgery reports, and incident documentation to ensure accuracy and continuity of care.
Collaborate on shelter-wide medical policies and procedures and deliver training to staff to ensure consistency, confidence, and teamwork.
Offer guidance to staff and citizens on animal wellness, nutrition, grooming, and behavior; refer cases to fullservice veterinary clinics when needed.
Review shelter sanitation protocols and inspect the facility to help maintain safe, healthy, and humane conditions for animals and staff.
About us

PRAS is a unique collaborative supported by four local communities: Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, and York County, VA. Each year the shelter receives over 6000 animals.
We strive to create a workplace where people feel appreciated, supported, and encouraged to grow. Our ideal candidate is not just an excellent veterinarian but a leader who elevates others through kindness, clarity, and collaboration.
