- Equine Ambulatory Theriogenology Internship
Description
This five-month clinical internship program at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine (UFCVM) delivered through the Equine Reproduction Specialty Service (ERSS) in the Ocala and Alachua, FL area will provide advanced clinical training in equine theriogenology (reproduction) with potential for training secondarily in small animal and ruminant reproduction. The goal of this training is to gain advanced reproductive clinical experience and to be competitive for a theriogenology residency, if desired. Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree by the starting date of the position.
The intern will spend approximately 21 weeks of theriogenology clinical service, 1 week of an elective rotation (approved by faculty advisors), and 1 weeks on vacation. The program would begin on, or before February 15th, 2027 and run through July 15th, 2027. Clinical responsibilities are performed during UFVH daytime business hours, weekends if needed, as well as after-hours when managing frozen semen or late-arriving embryos for transfer. The intern’s clinical schedule will be structured to ensure that the majority of their time is spent working directly with their program advisor, with the remainder of their time assigned to working with other faculty clinicians. Occasionally, additional assistance may be requested from the in-house Theriogenology faculty during the peak breeding season; the intern may be asked to participate as needed in the in-house service, at their advisor’s discretion. A collaborative, team-based approach to all cases is expected. The intern will also be responsible for participating in occasional reproductive emergencies involving horses from farms serviced by ERSS.
The intern is encouraged to participate in a research project or development of a case report, and prepare a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed veterinary journal, although time will be limited and completion during the program is neither expected or required. The intern selects or is assigned to a faculty research advisor. This advisor may or may not be the faculty program advisor. The research advisor is responsible for offering and assigning an appropriate project that the intern could participate in in a meaningful way during their program. The advisor participates in and supervises preparation of study design, study execution, data analysis, and manuscript preparation. The advisor is also responsible for necessary study funding of the project, as needed.
