- Mixed Animal Externship
Description
If you are looking to experience "cowboy culture ingrained in modern medicine," GVC offers a rare opportunity to extern at one of the last remaining truly mixed-animal, privately owned practices in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Established in 1936, GVC is a high-volume, multi-doctor practice with locations in Glenwood Springs and Silt, Colorado.
We are committed to giving back to the profession by providing clinical students with real-world private practice experience. At Glenwood Veterinary Clinic, we are a truly comprehensive mixed-animal practice dedicated to providing high-quality care for a vast range of species, including dogs, cats, horses, cattle, sheep, goats, chickens, pigs, and exotics. Whether in our clinic or out in the field, our team is equipped to handle the unique medical and surgical needs of nearly any animal, embodying a versatile approach to modern veterinary medicine.
We prioritize a "learning by doing" philosophy, offering a structured schedule tailored to your specific professional interests and clinical goals. We encourage students in their clinical years to apply for a two-to-three-week stay, and we are proud to provide free on-site housing to help facilitate your visit. Beyond clinical skills, our team is happy to provide mentorship and insight into practice management, business operations, and career placement. To maintain the highest quality of mentorship, we limit our program to no more than three externs at a time between the two practices, so early application is highly recommended.
Our externship program serves as a premier gateway to our six-month Apprenticeship Program, which is specifically designed for new graduates looking to sharpen their skills and develop their craft under strong mentorship. We view the externship as a "working interview" environment where you can fully immerse yourself in our culture and diverse caseload. As an apprentice, you will benefit from a structured, sustainable alternative to a traditional internship—one that prioritizes mental health, work-life balance, and financial support while providing the guidance needed to transition from "Ivory Tower" medicine to successful real-life practice. Our mission is to ensure that the art of the mixed-animal general practitioner does not go the way of the dodo.
