Description
The SPOT Clinic, associated with the Humane Society of Parkersburg, is seeking a veterinarian. This is an exempt position. The veterinarian provides high-quality medical care including spay/neuter and wellness services for both shelter animals and our community, as well as being responsible for providing basic medical care for shelter animals. The SPOT Clinic is a low-cost, high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter clinic. The incumbent is responsible for developing, advancing, and implementing shelter medicine protocols and ensuring the humane delivery of treatment to all animals seen in the clinic.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The veterinarian reports to the Executive Director while working closely with veterinary technicians, assistants, and other clinic staff. (S)he provides veterinary support and guidance to the clinic and shelter staff.
Requirements
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinate and direct medical operations and ensure sound veterinary medical practices are in place.
- Lead the evaluation and establishment of medical and surgical protocols.
- Continuously improve the medical management program to ensure high-quality medical care and focuses on the identification, treatment, and prevention of health problems.
- Examine all animals pre-operatively to determine their ability to undergo surgery.
- Perform surgical sterilization and other procedures as needed.
- Examine animals, supervise post-op rechecks, and oversee the ordering of medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete recovery.
- Inoculate animals and provide recommendations for follow-up care
- Provide low-cost wellness services and vaccines to the public, as scheduled.
- Provide veterinary oversight and care to the shelter population, including daily rounds of all shelter animals.
- Supervise cleaning program for prevention of infectious/zoonotic disease.
- Supervise handling and recording of controlled substances by staff.
- Actively promote spaying and neutering and educate the community on responsible pet ownership.
- Actively support and promote the development of skills related to the advancement of the organization’s goals and mission.
- Always represent the organization in a professional and courteous manner.
- Provide quality service to clients, volunteers, and staff recognizing their contributions to our organization’s success.
- Guide staff in situations requiring medical problem-solving.
- Participate in hiring decisions for veterinary staff.
- Provide guidance and support for shelter staff certified to perform euthanasia.
- Provide professional credibility to the organization’s endeavor to fulfill its mission.
- Participate on committees and special projects.
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must currently hold or be willing and able to obtain an unrestricted license to practice veterinary medicine in the state of West Virginia
- Must currently hold or be willing to obtain a DEA license.
- Must have three to five years of surgical experience (of varied types including spay/neuter).
- Must possess animal handling skills.
- Must maintain malpractice insurance.
- Must possess the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be able to communicate effectively (both oral and written) with a diverse staff, volunteers, and the community in a professional, pleasant, and respectful manner.
- Must possess organizational, time management, and planning skills.
- Must demonstrate good judgment and display a professional demeanor.
- Must possess good analytical skills and the ability to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Must demonstrate the ability to foster a positive working environment and be a motivator and leader.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Standing for extended periods.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds with assistance.
- Ability to bend and kneel repeatedly.
- May be subject to animal bites and/or scratches.
- May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, as related to standard veterinary practice.
